Always leave the top, batting and backing separate. Never thread baste or pin them together.

The top and backing fabric edges should be perfectly straight. The backing fabric should be 4 to 6 inches larger than the top (10 to 15 cm) on all sides. Ideally, the batting should also be 4 to 6 inches larger than the top.

The top and backing should be well pressed and neatly folded. The batting should be clean and threadfree. Any strings or long threads on the top should be trimmed, especially dark threads under a light fabric, as they will show through the top fabric.

If the backing fabric is directional, place a safety pin with a note attached to the “top” side to alert the quilter.

Never attach embellishments before the top is quilted. This includes buttons, beads, or crystals.
